About the Exhibition
TOTO GALLERY・MA is pleased to present Tezzo Nishizawa: Chance Favors the Prepared Mind, the first solo exhibition by architect Tezzo Nishizawa, who has designed numerous art exhibitions, museums, and other cultural facilities, among them the Kyoto City KYOCERA Museum of Art (with Jun Aoki and Associates) and the Hachinohe Art Museum (with Yoshihide Asaco and Junpei Mori).
Mr. Nishizawa asks, “How far does the ‘totality’ of architecture extend?” What we consider the purview of architecture appears to be ever-expanding, yet the true essence of what we call architecture lies hidden behind its visible manifestations. He posits that architecture’s most fascinating aspect is to be found in the process of planning those invisible, essential elements.
The title “Chance Favors the Prepared Mind” reflects Mr. Nishizawa’s dedicated approach to architecture, in which he seeks to grasp that not-yet-visible essence by making the most thorough preparations possible. The fact that the architecture born of this combination of meticulous design work with repeated on-site “tuning” brings joy and new discoveries to those who experience it may simply be a fortuitous result of his painstaking methodology.
Mr. Nishizawa describes this exhibition as a project of discovery of something he was not aware of before. We hope that it will provide visitors with clues that guide them to their own discoveries as they explore the rich “inner life” of architecture.
