HYDROTECT cleans cities as well as the air.
HYDROTECT washes the dirt from buildings and purifies the air surrounding them by harnessing the force of nature alone, such as the power of sunlight and rain. When converted to an area of green land that purifies the air in a similar way, the air purification effect of HYDROTECT that has been obtained to date is equivalent to approx. 150 million m². This means that the amount of NOx discharged by around 1.8 million passenger cars* has been purified.

The air pollutant NOx and the contribution to the protection
NOx is an air pollutant that causes photochemical oxidation and acid rain and many other kinds of environmental problems, including the destruction of forests and health hazards. The amount of NOx has recently been on the rise in emerging countries in East Asia, such as China and India, creating an international issue. In response to this, various environmental restrictions have been placed and various approaches have been initiated in Japan, Europe, the United States and other countries around the world. Under these circumstances, photocatalyst technology has come under the spotlight as one of the measures against air pollution, due to its negligible environmental impact since it uses the forces of nature, and due to its versatility that allows its application in many types of products.

*) NMHC (Non-Methane hydrocarbons): A generic name for hydrocarbons other than methane (saturated aliphatic hydrocarbon, unsaturated hydrocarbon, aromatic hydrocarbon). The countermeasures against these hydrocarbons have been pursued as a causative agent of photochemical oxidation through the ages. They are sometimes referred to as NMVOC (Non-Methane Volatile Organic Compounds).

What is a lifecycle assessment (LCA)?
A lifecycle assessment is a technique for quantitatively assessing the environmental burdens and environmental impacts associated with all the lifecycle stages of a product, from the extraction of the raw materials that create the product through to the acquisition of materials, product manufacturing, distribution, use and disposal by recycling. The effect on the environment (environmental value) of the HYDROTECT coating and a general coating have been calculated here with the system areas being material, manufacture, transportation, application and usage by using LIME2, which is a Japanese lifecycle impact assessment method of LCA.

*Using LIME2, calculate the environmental impacts associated with HYDROTECT coating (HYDROTECT Color Coat ECO-EX) applied to a single house (154.9 m²*), assuming it is replaced every 20 years, and with a general coating (acrylic silicon coat) applied to a single house (154.9 m²*), assuming it is replaced every 10 years.
