"A Testament" Mourning for Hiroshi Ohe

'89 Aug.21-Aug.30

Hiroshi Ohe undertook to produce architecture during one of the most tumultuous periods of its modern development, nearly isolating himself in his struggle to preserve an independent style. This commemorative exhibition, along with a chronological presentation of his archivements, features at its center a small shrine, made and used by Ohe himseif, to hold an image of a birth Buddha. As if to protect this shrine, he housed it within a larger wooden structure. One piece of the wood capitals used for "National Theater Nougakudo"(1983), is displayed symbolically outdoors, creating a fitting atmosphere of simple austerity.
