Reduction in Harmful Chemical Substances

Reducing harmful substances from our products

TOTO is making stern efforts to remove harmful substances from all the products we provide to customers, based upon applicable laws and regulations (the Act on the Evaluation of Chemical Substances and Regulation of Their Manufacture, etc.*and the Industrial Health and Safety Law) and demands from the market.
Our goal is to reduce to the barest minimum the effects of chemical substances on our bodies and the Earth. We also work together with our suppliers and utilize green procurement to ensure the products and parts delivered to the TOTO Group are also carefully managed in regards to harmful chemicals.

* Act on the Evaluation of Chemical Substances and Regulation of Their Manufacture, etc. This act governs reviews and regulations on manufacturing in regard to chemical substances.

Handling of VOC (Volatile Organic Compounds)

The Building Standards Act was amended in 2002 to regulate VOCs, which is said by some to be the cause of sick house syndrome.
TOTO is taking measures to deal with chlorpyrifos and formaldehyde, which are regulated substances.
At present, TOTO is not using any chlorpyrifos at all, and we will continue to prohibit the use of any materials that contain chlorpyrifos, or are coated or sprayed with it. As to formaldehyde, we use construction materials of the highest-rated class (F☆☆☆☆), guaranteeing that formaldehyde emissions are extremely low in all products that are covered by these measures.
TOTO Group is also taking steps with regard to toluene, xylene, ethylbenzene, and styrene, four VOCs for which the construction material industry and housing equipment industry set voluntary standards in 2008. We label our products as "Compliant with 4 VOC Standards (Wooden Construction Materials)," having verified compliance with the standards in accordance with the VOC labeling guidelines for housing components created by the Japan Association of Kitchen & Bath and five other organizations.

Environmental Contribution through Superior Air Purification Performance

HYDROTECT is An innovative solution for a cleaner environment both outside and inside homes and businesses through photocatalytic processes that use only natural resources such as water and light.
It has self-cleaning effect for building facades and also cleans air by removing nitrogen oxides(NOx)emitted by cars and industrial activities.

Preeminent Air Purification Performance

HYDROTECT's capacity to purify air is profound. The performance and utilization method of HYDROTECT Color Coat ECO-EX, a photocatalyst paint for exterior walls, made it the first product to be recognized by the Photocatalysis Industry Association of Japan.

Prevalence of HYDROTECT

HYDROTECT finds applications not only in TOTO's own tile building materials, paints, and coatings, but also in a wide variety of products produced by over 100 companies in Japan and overseas under licensing agreements with TOTO.
Since 2009, TOTO has also been engaged in popularization programs to promote what it calls "HYDROTECT Partners," a global partnership with the common objective of making social and environmental contributions. It has been steadily expanding and popularizing these programs overseas, and at present, major construction materials manufacturers, chiefly in Japan, the United States, and Europe, are participating. In the future, the TOTO Group will be expanding its "Environmental Clean-up Circles."
