The TOTO Group strives without limit to eliminate all causes of hindrances to the implementation of management policies in order to maintain the confidence of society through the fulfillment of its corporate social responsibilities. In cases of unexpected problems, maximum efforts will be made to minimize various effects on stakeholders and to restore confidence of related parties by developing appropriate preventive measures.
To smoothly advance health and safety activities and to raise the standards, TOTO Group holds a Health, Safety and Security Committee meeting once every six months. Representatives of divisions and labor unions attend the meeting to formulate company-wide policies and Basic Policy for the year in an effort to promote transparency at each division. In addition, corporate and labor representatives participate in the Health and Safety Committee held monthly at each division to report and deliberate safety and sanitation activities, and determine measures to improve them, to promote penetration of activities in the workplace via personnel in charge of safety and health in the workplace. In addition, once at the end of the fiscal year, the Board of Directors will hear a report of the deliberations of the Health, Safety and Security Committee to review promotion of safety and health activities.
Health and Safety Management System
TOTO Group reflects the comprehensive objectives of the ILO Guidelines, in accordance with the Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare's Industrial Safety and Health Management System Policy as the Health, Safety and Security Management System functions throughout the entire TOTO Group.
Initiatives for Comfortable Workplace Environment
TOTO Group endeavors to maintain and improve a comfortable workplace environment for employees to prevent occupational illnesses. Using measurements from the work environment to identify current conditions, we take actions to counter the source of issues, improve working methods, conduct training in order to establish a management system common to the Business Group and expand our efforts.
TOTO uses stricter management standards than the rest of the world in a day-to-day, ongoing basis. Measures to eradicate dust itself to eliminate the need for masks, Local Exhaust equipment has been installed and other facility-dependent measures have been taken in an effort to shorten exposure time, while protective equipment such as dust masks are worn in areas that do not respond to these countermeasures in order to prevent impact to the human body.
To avoid irreversible occupational disease (hearing loss),we provide thorough training in use of equipment to contain the source, shortening exposure time, and correct use of ear plugs and other protective wear in locations where countermeasures are difficult to implement.
Chemical substance management
We make knowledge of SDS common, measure the work environment for organic solvents and specific chemical substances, and implement measures for locations where problems are identified. In addition,risk assessments for chemical substances are advanced in alignment with TOTO Group.
Prevention of Occupational Accidents
Examination of Health and Safety We have executed a three-year plan to perform a systematic inspection of safety since 2006. This is to curb "unsafe movements" or avoid a risky situation in a plant of a Group production company where a human error leads to a disaster. We have investigated at all the production bases of the Group the status of safety management system, unsafe movements of workers in a plant, or risks of unstable equipment. It resulted in significant improvement of safety in our Group, and helped build a safer environment. All countermeasures for locations indicted in the Safety Check are now complete for FY 2015 as well as we continue to resolve safety issues.
Foster awareness of safety
Safety and Health Training
TOTO Group conducts regular in-house safety and health training in a continuous effort to improve safety for site workers and the knowledge of safety personnel.
Hierarchy-based training (mandatory)
Group training is provided to all new employees, new section managers, new department general managers and new group company presidents. (In 2014, 408 people participated.)
New foreman training
Provided to new foreman (Manufacturing Department) at each location.
Provided to new employees at each location.
Provided to transferees and employees who change duties.
Provided for inexperienced workers.
Skill improvement training
Safety and the Environment Section managers and Safety personnel are provided Safety Personnel Meetings and Workshops (2 times per year), a study group for measurement of the workplace environment, and national block leader meetings.
Site workers are provided experience-based training in risks within the company.
All employees watch a safety training DVD.
Traffic safety training
TOTO Group holds traffic safety awareness courses for personnel who commute via Sales Department cars as well as personally owned cars, motorbikes and bicycles.
Conditions in which Work-Related Accidents Occur
TOTO Group strives to assess the conditions of work-related disasters which occured to prevent similar accidents. The number of Group work-related accidents trends downward every year, and both the manufacturing severity rate and frequency of work-related accidents in 2015 fell below the national average for the manufacturing industry. To continue to further approach zero, TOTO Group thoroughly enforces initiatives to prevent similar accidents.
Initiatives for a Healthy Mind and Body
The TOTO Group Corporate Philosophy states the idea of "creating an employee friendly work environment that respects the individuality of each employee", and we are promoting mental and physical health with the goal of realizing work environments that facilitate work. In order to achieve that, we are developing health-conscious initiatives on the three pillars of health care, mental health measures and health promotion.
TOTO Group (in Japan) regularly conducts health examinations and follow-up measures to prevent physical illness and promote health maintenance For fiscal 2015, we aimed and succeeded in reaching 100% in three rates: the Regular Health Checkup Examination Rate, the Secondary Screening Participation Rate (Retest and/or Detailed Test), and Rate of Health Guidance Implementation (Industrial Physician and/or Public Health Nurse). Analysis of health examination data is ongoing as measures are introduced based on the results.
Reduced Absenteeism for Mental Health
For maintenance of mental health, TOTO Group (in Japan) promotes the four types of care as advocated by the Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare:(self-care, and care from the line (care from a supervisor) care such as that provided by workplace public health care staff, and care from resources outside the workplace (such as from various institutions outside the workplace and expert care). As a result, the number of new cases of employees with mental health issues remains flat. In addition, management and labor promote work-life balance to maintain employee health and are in the process of optimizing labor hours. TOTO Group (in Japan) established internal standards in addition to standards implemented by law for employees working long hours to undergo an interview with a doctor, so that not only is the health of employees in question examined by an industrial physician who also offers guidance and advice, their current duties are reviewed by a superior to prevent recurrence of long working hours and review and future preventative measures.
Survey and follow-up for new employees at time of joining The comprehensive training program at the TOTO Group New Employee Ceremony includes a seminar about mental and physical self-care to deepen understanding and health-related surveys that include items about anxiety are conducted after new employees join the company.
Mental health seminars for third year employees Industry doctors conduct mental health seminars as part of training for third year employees. We also care for the mental health of sales-related employees as a public health nurse interviews all such employees.
Individual interviews When employees return after an absence due to mental health issues, the workplace manager, the personnel division and the industrial health staff division cooperate on a Committee for Determining Return to Work, and an interview with an industry doctor is carried out, and follow-up sessions are continually implemented thereafter.
Management and supervisor training (Attendance rate: 100%) includes training for mental health management, such as the early detection of, consideration for and treatment of people suffering from poor mental health.
Promoting Good Health
TOTO Group (in Japan) runs various health promotion programs that center on the Health Care Center and TOTO Health Insurance Association as one part of efforts to maintain employee health. To counter lifestyle-related diseases and promote better health in FY2015, the employee cafeteria menu was changed to list calories and salt, while events such as "Food Education Event Health Care Menu" and the "Walking Event", "Health Seminar" and "Non-Smoking Challenge" were held. Of these, TOTO Headquarters and Kokura Plant No. 1 in particular increased the number of events in its Health Improvement Activitie, for which participants numbered roughly 900 in 2014,compared to the significant increase in the approximate total of 1300 for fiscal year 2015. This increase in the participation rate leads to results that include prevention of lifestyle-related diseases ,health promotion, and fostering awareness of good health. We are also using the company intranet to communicate information depending on the season and epidemics regarding lifestyle disease prevention, heat-related illness, and influenza, etc.In fiscal year 2015, we set up a site for supporting health improvement. It presents health improvement activities conducted at different workplaces. A health consultation counter has also been established for the purpose of health counseling and consultation for all employees.
TOTO was lauded for its health initiatives underscored by the three pillars "Health Management," "Reduced Absenteeism Due to Mental Health," and "Health Promotion (Promoting Good Health)"and named as FY2014Health Management Brand, in an event sponsored by the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry and the Tokyo Stock Exchange.
