HYDROTECT

HYDROTECT is a technical brand name of TOTO applied to products that use either super hydrophilic photocatalyst technology or photocatalytic organic decomposition technology, TOTO’s original technologies.

Introduction

TOTO successfully developed super hydrophilic photocatalyst technology for the first time in the world. This technology forms an ultra-thin layer of water on a material surface and then makes the surface of various materials super hydrophilic (non-water repelling).
We advanced the technology of photocatalytic thin films which was jointly developed with former professor Akira Fujishima of the University of Tokyo (incumbent chairman of Kanagawa Academy of Science and Technology) in order to enhance the effectiveness of super hydrophilicity.
Materials coated with a super hydrophilic photocatalyst offer various benefits such as anti-fogging property and self-cleaning property (which makes cleaning easier with water).

HYDROTECT uses the principle of photocatalysis

The photocatalytic properties of HYDROTECT

HYDROTECT produces a number of environmentally-beneficial effects, including air purification and self-cleaning,through a process similar to photosynthesis in plants.
When exposed to sunlight,HYDROTECT's photocatalytic layer(titanium oxide) breaks down organic material so that it is easily washed with rain or water.

Benefit of HYDROTECT

Air purification

HYDROTECT on the surface of buildings’ exterior walls removes nitrogen oxide (NOx) produced by exhaust fumes and smoke and cleanses the air.

[Source and basis for calculations]
1)Figures are based on ECO-EX HYDROTECT Color Coat applied to exterior walls with an area of 154.9m2
(*surface area per house calculated in accordance with the Single House Model published by the Architectural Institute of Japan in Standard Housing Problems.)
2)Plants have the ability to absorb pollutants from the air.
The amount of nitrogen dioxide absorbed by green land (lawns, fields, etc.) is calculated on the basis of 4.4mg/m2 per day, in accordance with the Manual on Planting for Cleaner Air (revised edition) published by the Environmental Restoration and Conservation Agency of Japan.
The area of a hard tennis court is based on the dimensions 23.77m×10.97m.
3) The volume of NOx emissions is calculated on the basis of 362.2mg per day, based on the emission coefficient of a DBA gasoline powered passenger vehicle (0.0125) used as a family car with an average mileage of 29.0km per day. Emission coefficients based on the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism's Road Transport Bureau compilation program for vehicle usage and management plans and regular reports in accordance with the Automotive NOx and PM Law Average annual mileage for family cars (10,575km) based on the 2004 Basic Survey on Vehicular Testing and Inspections published by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism's Road Transport Bureau of Japan.

Self-cleaning

Since HYDROTECT keeps buildings clean effortlessly, it reduces the amount of detergents and cleaning water needed for maintenance and improves environmental conservation.

Antibacterial,anti-mold,anti-dirt and anti-odor capabilities

By decomposing organic substances, photocatalysts also help improve hygiene inside buildings, making it easy to keep walls, floors and other surfaces clean in locations such as toilets, bathrooms and kitchens.
